Single-phase or three-phase? Your switchboard will tell you.

It matters because it decides which chargers your home can run: single-phase homes top out at a 7 kW charger (plenty for most people), while three-phase unlocks 22 kW. Here’s how to tell in 30 seconds — no tools, no electrician.

Open your switchboard (the panel with all the switches, usually near your meter) and find the switch labelled MAIN SWITCH. Now just look at its width:

Single-phase — one skinny switch

The main switch is one switch wide — the same size as the others on the board. Most Melbourne homes are single-phase. Your pick: the 7 kW chargers.

Three-phase — one wide switch

The main switch is three switches wide, often with one long handle across all three. You’ve got three-phase — 22 kW charging is on the menu (three-phase installs add $169 for the extra materials).
